We are the music makers... and we are the dreamers of dreams... wandering by lone sea-beakers... and sitting by desolate streams... --Arthur William Edgar O' Shaugnessy

The 'Wander Inn', Freehold, New Jersey

I shot these photos one fine Autumn day back when I lived in New Jersey... I used to pass by this empty, abandoned compound of structures whenever I went to Freehold, and was always very curious about them. So one day I decided to stop and check them out...

In the front, closest to the road, was the building above. Sort of house-like, it almost looked like someone was fixing it up- new windows, lamps, screen door, etc. However... it had sat unfinished this way for as long as I'd seen it, with the yellow grassy weeds engulfing it in ever-higher waves and the collapsing chimney spilling a gradual flood of red brick down the shingled roof...

Around the back, a half-finished porch looked out onto a group of colorful, open-air cabana-style buildings clustered in the trees beyond. At their center stood what appeared to be an old brick oven or grill of some sort, surrounded by large drifts of quietly rustling leaves. Vacant lounge chairs and upturned cocktail tables added an eerie touch to the deserted scene...

One of the 'cabanas' was dominated by what appeared to be a good-sized bar/grill at it's center, complete with a box filled with butter knives. The whole thing had an outdoorsy, camp-style feel to it... as if it had hosted it's share of barbecues and summer soirees in it's heyday... whenever that might have been. I never did see any signs anywhere to indicate what the place had been, or what it's name was. But some time later a resident of Freehold told me he remembered the place from before it was abandoned, and that it was then known as the 'Wander Inn'.

So far I have not been able to find out anything else about this lost location, and it's reason for abandonment remains unknown.

Do you have any background information or stories to tell about this abandoned site?
