Road Trip to San
Antonio/Austin/Waco, Texas |
explored & photographed by:
Shady, October 2004
We took a road trip to San Antonio
and beyond, to explore and photograph some more Texas weirdness on
behalf of the Marks of WNJ
for their next book, Weird Texas (check out their Weird
US book right now)! Here, some snapshots from the road... I
have always LOVED San Antonio. It's a beautiful area (just look at
that ummm, mound we saw on the road!)... the people are
super-friendly (like Jerry, below, who serenaded
us with our requests
at our table one night... in fact he was singing Marty Robbin's 'El
Paso' when this pic was shot)... the food rules (like at Rudy's...
'worst' BBQ in Texas, which is actually really great and unbelievably
cheap eatin'). Good times, good times... |
|
We also took the dastardly felines,
Bela and Sabre, along with
us on this trip too... those kitties are becoming regular road trip
veterans! They are equally comfortable on the road and in the hotel
room... in fact I think they even enjoy traveling.... |
|
You can tell that I just got a new
camera, when I'm taking photos of everything from neat gargoyle
lamps (they were all over the place) to bees (the killer zoom let me
get close to this guy without fear of his sting) to sunsets (shot
from inside a moving car and still came out ok) to knees (yes,
mine)..... |
|
I always find the best
things in cemeteries- amusing things like a Jesus-loving duck... a
statue with a bird for a 'hat'... a tomb sphinx that looked a lot
like Elvis... and beautiful things like flowers on a crypt door... a
gorgeous moss-covered angel monument... a cheerfully-bright ladybug.
And then there was the craziest sign ever, which I can't say more
about yet as the location of this place is under wraps until the
book comes out, mwa ha ha....
|
|
Ummm... about these next pictures...
I can only say.... I blame it all on the vodka!! Yep! Vodka talked me
into it, hahaha... *wink* In case you're not familiar with the
infamous Coyote
Ugly Saloon, it is known for it's wild & sexy female bartenders who
get up and dance on the bar (notice the sign... as you can see, there
are no roosters allowed)...
|
|
Now you know it's gonna be an
interesting night when the first sign you see says 'Dress Code
Enforced- No Bras or Ties... lose 'em or we will take 'em!!'
... heh heh. Especially considering that there are tons of bras all
over the place hanging from every conceivable surface. And as you can
see, the bartenders do some very errrm, special kinds of
shots...
|
|
It got pretty wild in there...
especially being that it was 'White Trash Night' and the drinks were
on special. I had a few myself, ahem. That's what led to me ending up
dancing on the bar, and damn them for having the presence of mind to
record it all in photographs!! *shakes fist* Heh heh heh... ok, I had
a blast, even if I did act afool...
|
|
But that's the fun of being on the
road, you get to cut loose a little (and perhaps dance with a hot
bartender, or two...... or three, mw ha)!
San Antonio is one of my very
favorite cities and it was fabulous to get to spend a little time
there. And I got to explore some of the coolest 'lost' places that I
have ever experienced on top of everything else. Woo hoo. Thank you
San Antonio and WNJ!!
