Building 265, Matawan, New Jersey |
explored & photographed by:
Shady I
have no idea what this squat, square brick building was, but it really
caught my curiosity.... while obviously deserted, it didn't look quite
like a house, but it also didn't look quite like a place of
business, either. I'm still not sure what it's original use was...? It
was just a kind of mysterious looking old place, which of course meant
I couldn't resist exploring it, ha... |

I found this place right around
the corner from the creepily-deserted Green
Acres house (in a lonely, wooded spot in Matawan) It gained it's nickname from the
enigmatic '265'
spray-painted in dark-red on it's front (yeah I'm real creative
with nicknames that way, ha) One of the strangest things was the
way there was a little door,
cut into one of the big doors... we were joking around that it was
a door to another dimension, or something, heh. We couldn't test
the theory though, as we couldn't find any way to open the weird
little door. D'oh. |

There were broken windows
everywhere... one in particular had strange little deer stickers
on it and was broken into an evilly-jagged maw (that skull
in the one shot is a reflection of a tshirt- don't get excited
heh). Some of the upper windows were still intact, and it was as
we looked into them that I started to get that
feeling that we were not alone... |

 |
That feeling intensified as we
went around the west
corner and discovered someone's outdoor 'living
room' alongside the place; hidden away under the canopy of a
massive pine like a leafy den, there was a sofa bed, 'nightstand'
(with some boots on it), a grill, a stove, some pots and pans,
etc. One of the more bizarre parts of this arrangement was how
someone had taken numerous old
trophies and set them up at each broken window on this side of
the place, like enigmatic talismans (or maybe shabby-chic
decorating at it's finest? Hmmm)... |

The side
door looked like it had been smashed off it's hinges from inside,
and lay on the ground like a drawbridge leading to the outdoor
living space... directly inside was a dark staircase, and a
small wood-paneled room (see my
'getaway' car through the window? Ha) The small room led
nowhere; the staircase led up... but as I started to mount
it's rotting steps, we heard a low, guttural sound- like a cough
or someone clearing their throat- from up above. Um, we decided not
to proceed, heading back out into the open... |

We didn't feel threatened,
exactly... there was just the uneasiness of not knowing if someone
was around/watching us or not (and if that someone was friendly or
not, and/or was armed or not, heh) We decided to
continue around outside and check out the east and back parts of
the place (while keeping a cautious eye on the building, heh) A
chain link fence lined the east side. Out back the place looked
pretty much the same, and was bordered by a square, dry field.
Some kind of big, red, farm-ish machinery was abandoned back
there, but I don't know exactly what it was... |
As we wandered around a bit
more, we both thought we heard more 'coughing...' as well as shuffling
sounds and other unidentifiable noises from in/around Building 265. We
stopped for a moment on the east side of the building, wondering if we
should investigate the sounds or just leave. That's when I looked
down, and noticed the wet,
bloody tissue, and the messy little blood spatters on the ground
around it. Holy crap. We hadn't seen it before, when we passed this
way... and this stuff was fresh... glistening. We could even
smell it's coppery scent in the air. We decided that it was time to
go.
I don't know if someone was 'living'
at creepy old Building 265. I don't know what the weird little door
was for... or why the trophies were on the windowsills...or what the
fresh blood on the ground meant. I don't know anything much about this
place at all, which is why it's mysteries intrigue me even more. Add
to that the fact that it sits just around the bend from the deserted,
lost-in-time 'Green Acres' house (you can
just see it back there on the right in this
pic) and it makes for a pretty odd, creepy little corner. Beware...
Do you have any background information or stories to tell about this abandoned
site?
